The Video Game
Paperbag Souls is a fictitious video game for the Playstation 3 platform designed by 20607297. It is an RPG which cleverly integrates traditional and digital media to establish its innovative graphics for gameplay. Because of it is developed by a new company, an eye-catching, engaging and interesting teaser/marketing ploy is needed to interest the target market.
The Comic Book
This is where Paperbag Souls: The comic, comes in. To promote video games, the conventional marketing package which consists of: posters, figurines/merchandise and collectors item’s for those who pre-order the game. Paperbag Souls is not promoted using any of these techniques. A comic was chosen so that the audience gets a visual understanding of the game in the form of something other than a demo, movie clip or screenshots.
The comic only illustrates the first chapter of the game in a super-condensed way. The main protagonist, Dust Phoenix, has been enjoying protecting his creator for all his life in a dreary Nymph wood until an enchantress steals his enslavement away. Free and in a new land, he tries to regain the cage from which he was cast. But wherever he goes, anyone who holds the slightest bit of help is stolen from him, leaving him in bitter agony.
